Fo’c’sle Jack was just a tiny boy of six-and-a-half 
weeks when he came to us -- not a Pomeranian, said he, but rather a Rare Pygmy Timberwolf. Who were we to argue? Now, at three years old, he’s in full grownup Pomeranian (er -- Timberwolf) coat and chock full of personality -- a happy, outgoing boy who loves to travel and who begins to frisk whenever I get his softsided airline carrier out. I love the sight of his small, merry face grinning up from beneath the seat in front of me on American, Continental, Delta or Northwest. Any trip -- whether car, train, or plane -- is better if Fo’c’sle Jack is along.
Named for Fo’c’sle Jack Tanner, a character in the 17th-century sea series I’m writing with my partner, this fine young Pom pirate stepped naturally into buccaneer boots and cultivated something of a brag and swagger as early as seven weeks old.
"Beware the machismo of the male Pom," wrote a friend to me a week after I got Jack.
If you have a Pom, you know exactly what I mean.
When not out a-pirating, the multi-talented Jack -- actor, singer, activist, part-time diplomat -- downplays his celebrity status at home in the U.S., signing autographs with easy goodwill and bonhomie, even while furthering his reputation as something of a Pom-about-Town.
